Nature
I have done most of my nature photography on
solitary journeys. I see pictures everywhere I go.
That is especially true in nature. It is quite a
challenge to try to do nature justice. It can at the
same moment be majestic, and intimate. A
mountain vista is perhaps one of the most difficult
subjects to render in two dimensions. I feel more
comfortable with individual trees, skies, and
details. I love to take scenes of extreme contrast
and try to bring out the full range of tones that
exist. That is the reason most of my work is done
on negative film. I have always exposed for the
shadows and burned in the highlights in the
darkroom. Now I am learning to do the same thing
with digital scans from my film. Nature is the one
gallery where you will eventually see images from
35mm, 645, and 4 X 5 film sizes. I feel equally
comfortable working in color or black and white.
